About this lesson
Xiao Li's alarm clock breaks and he asks his grandfather's old rooster-shaped clock to help. It sings so loudly that the whole building wakes up, and the neighbors end up thanking him.

Xiao Li has to go to Beijing for a meeting tomorrow morning.
可是他的闹钟坏了。
Kěshì tā de nàozhōng huài le.
But his alarm clock was broken.
他很怕自己起不来。
Tā hěn pà zìjǐ qǐ bù lái.
He was very afraid he would not be able to get up.
晚上他给爷爷打了电话。
Wǎnshang tā gěi yéye dǎ le diànhuà.
In the evening he called his grandfather.
爷爷骑车给他送来一个旧闹钟。
Yéye qíchē gěi tā sòng lái yí gè jiù nàozhōng.
Grandpa rode over on his bike and brought him an old alarm clock.
闹钟的样子像一只大公鸡。
Nàozhōng de yàngzi xiàng yì zhī dà gōngjī.
The clock looked like a big rooster.
爷爷说：“它的声音很特别。”
Yéye shuō: “Tā de shēngyīn hěn tèbié.”
Grandpa said, “Its sound is very special.”
小李笑着把它放在床边。

Xiao Li smiled and put it beside his bed.
第二天早上五点，闹钟突然唱起歌来。

At five the next morning, the clock suddenly began to sing.
它唱得又大声又难听。

As soon as Xiao Li heard the singing, he jumped up from the bed.

He searched for a long time but could not turn the rooster off.

The singing got louder and louder, and everyone in the building got up.

Auntie Wang put on slippers and ran to his door.

Xiao Li said with a red face, “I’m sorry!”
王阿姨听了以后，哈哈大笑起来。
Wáng āyí tīng le yǐhòu, hāhā dà xiào qǐlai.
After hearing it, Auntie Wang burst out laughing.
她说自己平时总是起得很晚。
Tā shuō zìjǐ píngshí zǒngshì qǐ de hěn wǎn.
She said she usually gets up very late.
今天她第一次看到了太阳升起来。
Jīntiān tā dì yī cì kàndào le tàiyang shēng qǐlai.
Today she saw the sun rise for the first time.
她还给小李拿来了一碗热面条。

She also brought Xiao Li a bowl of hot noodles.
